Organised labour in Sokoto State, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, has endorsed Governor Ahmed Aliyu for a second term in 2027.
The endorsement was announced on Friday during the International Workers’ Day celebration in Sokoto.
The state chairman of the NLC, Abdullahi Aliyu Jungle, said the decision was based on the administration’s welfare policies, including the implementation of the N70,000 national minimum wage and regular payment of salaries and pensions.
“You have done nothing wrong to us, and you have been tremendously assisting us in many ways. Therefore, nothing warrants us to ask for a change of government in 2027,” he said.
Jungle, who spoke on behalf of both unions, commended the government for what he described as improved welfare for workers and consistency in salary payments.
The labour unions also presented the governor with an Award of Excellence, describing it as the first of its kind in the state.
“This is the first time in the history of NLC/TUC in the state to bestow such an award on any governor,” Jungle said.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Idris Muhammad Gobir, expressed appreciation for the endorsement and said the administration would sustain efforts to improve workers’ welfare.
“We are happy with all that you have been doing for us. While in other states they are progressing today, here in Sokoto, we are elated,” he added.
He noted that the government had taken steps to reposition the civil service since assuming office in 2023.
Also speaking, the state Head of Service, Abdulkadir Ahmed, urged workers to reciprocate the government’s efforts with dedication and professionalism.
The endorsement comes amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
