Matawalle’s attack on Northern elders ill-advised, says Hakeem Baba-Ahmed

The special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on political matters, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, has described the scathing criticism of the Northern Elders Forum by the minister of state defence, Bello Matawalle, as ill-advised.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the forum, in a statement by its spokesman AbdulAziz Suleiman, had said the region regrets voting for President Tinubu.

He also said the region has learned its lesson and won’t make similar mistakes in 2027.

Reacting to the comment in a press statement on Saturday, Mr Matawalle said the elders lacked the authority to speak for the entire region, noting that they have become a political burden to Northerners.

However, in a statement on his X handle@baba_hakeem, the presidential aide said Mr Matawalle could have done a better job in defence of the administration without denigrating the group.

“Scathing criticism of NEF by junior minister of defence, Matawalle, is ill- advised. He could have done a better job for this admin if he identified contributions of especially northern ministers and other appointees like me to improving security and reducing poverty in the North,” Mr Baba-Ahmed wrote.
