A routine traffic stop by the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD) early Friday morning led to a major drug bust, resulting in the seizure of nearly half a pound of methamphetamine.
The incident unfolded around 3 a.m. as SLCPD officers pulled over an SUV on 1500 South West Temple St. due to the vehicle lacking a license plate. The driver, identified as James Castro, aged 52, was found to be driving without a valid license or insurance, while the passenger, Caroline Campbell, aged 45, was discovered not wearing a seatbelt.
Upon further inspection, the police impounded the vehicle and conducted an inventory search, uncovering over 200 grams of methamphetamine – which equates to nearly half a pound of the illegal substance. Alongside the drugs, authorities also found scales and packaging materials indicative of an intent to distribute.
James Castro was subsequently booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on charges including possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving without insurance, and driving with a denied license. Caroline Campbell was also arrested and booked into the same jail on a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
It is important to note that the charges at this stage are merely allegations, and both individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
