A SUSPECT has been taken into custody by police after the home of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was broken into.
Police responded to a call to the Los Angeles mayor’s official home, the Getty House, early on Sunday.

“This morning at about 6:40 am, an intruder broke into Getty House through a window,” the mayor’s office said in a statement.
“Mayor Bass and her family were not injured and are safe. The Mayor is grateful to LAPD for responding and arresting the suspect.”
The suspect was arrested after and taken into custody, police told local Fox affiliate WTTV.
Information about what the thief tried to take from the home or potential charges that may be filed against them has not been made public.
LAPD spokesperson Kelly Muniz said more details about the suspect would be released in “a couple of hours,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
THE GETTY HOUSE
The Getty House is a historic monument built in 1921 that houses the mayor and hosts a slew of official events.
It is located on the 600 block of Irving Boulevard in Windsor Square.
The spot was designed by the same architects who crafted the Egpytian and Chinese Theatres on Hollywood Boulevard, according to the nonprofit organization that manages the site.
Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa became the first mayor to move into the Getty House in 2005 with a vision of bridging the public and private divides of his community.
Bass is the third mayor to take up residency in the Getty House and has continued her predecessors’ traditions of inviting the community into the historic space.
VIOLENT CRIME IN CALIFORNIA
California’s violent crime rate increased by about 10% in 2022, according to the Public Policy Institute of California – but with some curious variations.
Overall, the numbers showed that aggravated assaults were 67% of reported violent crimes, 25% were robberies, 7% were rapes, and 1% were homicides.
- Rates for robbery (theft with force) and aggravated assault increased by 9.9% and 5.2%
- Homicides dropped by 6.1%
- Rapes remained about the same
WHO IS MAYOR KAREN BASS?
Bass is the first woman and second Black person to become the mayor of Los Angeles, the second largest city in the US.
The 43rd mayor of Los Angeles previously served in the US House of Representatives and the state assembly.
There, she became the first Black woman to serve as the speaker of a state legislative body in American history.
Bass was sworn in as mayor in late 2022, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before getting into politics, she worked as a physician assistant and concentrated on community organizing.
THE SECOND TIME
This is not the first time Bass has dealt with thieves since becoming a public figure.
Her home was broken into by two men in 2022 when she was running for office.
The thieves made off with two handguns but were soon arrested and charged by police.
Patricio Munoz and Juan Espinoza received prison sentences after pleading no contest to burglary and grand theft of a firearm in the case.
The LAPD and representatives for the mayor did not immediately respond to a request for comment by The U.S. Sun.
