Lagos vows to protect journalists, strengthen press freedom

The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to press freedom and democratic accountability, declaring that a free and responsible media remains central to governance, transparency and national development.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the position known in a message to mark the 2026 World Press Freedom Day, delivered by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso.

“I wish to assure you that the Lagos State Government will continue to support initiatives that promote press freedom, protect journalists, and strengthen democratic accountability,” the governor said.

He described the occasion as a moment for critical reflection within the media and governance ecosystem.

“Today presents yet another opportunity for us to deliberate, review our progress over time, and reassess the level of commitment, particularly among key stakeholders, to the true ideals of press freedom,” he said.

Anchored on the theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development and Security,” Sanwo-Olu emphasised that the media plays a defining role in shaping public discourse, strengthening institutions and advancing sustainable development.

“A free press remains one of the strongest pillars of democracy as it gives voice to the voiceless, holds leaders accountable, and serves as a vital bridge between the government and the people,” he said, adding that “in today’s rapidly evolving information landscape, the responsibility placed on the media has never been more significant.”

The governor urged journalists to uphold professionalism, particularly in a period marked by policy reforms and shifting socio-economic realities.

“More than ever, the current realities in our country, especially the various reforms being undertaken at different levels of government, make it imperative for members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to remain committed to objective, balanced, and professional reporting that critically examines government policies while ensuring accountability in a fair and unbiased manner,” he said.

While reiterating the government’s openness to engagement, he stressed that a well-informed society is critical to stability and growth.

“We firmly believe that a well-informed society is fundamental to peace, security, and inclusive development. At the same time, the media must continue to discharge its responsibilities without fear or favour,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu also raised concerns over emerging threats within the information ecosystem, warning that misinformation, disinformation, economic pressures and safety risks facing journalists pose serious challenges.

“These challenges call for stronger collaboration among government, media practitioners, civil society, and other stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of our information ecosystem,” he said.

With Nigeria approaching another electoral cycle, the governor underscored the heightened responsibility of the media in shaping national conversations.

“The press will undoubtedly serve as a key stakeholder in shaping public discourse during the electioneering process. This makes it essential for all actors to uphold the principles of ethical journalism, fairness, and national interest,” he said.

He further called for sustained investment in media literacy and support systems that would enable journalists to operate effectively and independently.

The statement reinforced the administration’s position that press freedom is not only a democratic imperative but also a cornerstone for peace, security and inclusive development.
