Kenya issues safety advisory to nationals in South Africa

The Kenya High Commission in Pretoria has advised Kenyan nationals residing in South Africa to exercise caution and remain vigilant following recent demonstrations and isolated incidents affecting foreign nationals in parts of the country.

In an advisory note issued on Monday on its X handle, the High Commission urged Kenyans to avoid areas where protests or demonstrations are taking place and to comply with guidance from local authorities.

“The Kenya High Commission in Pretoria wishes to advise all Kenyan nationals residing in the Republic of South Africa to exercise caution and remain vigilant in light of recent demonstrations and isolated incidents reported in some parts of the Republic of South Africa affecting foreign nationals,” the statement read.

It further advised residents to carry valid identification documents at all times and report emergencies to both South African authorities and the diplomatic mission.

“In the event of any incident or emergency, Kenyan nationals are advised to report the same to the South African Police Service and to inform the Kenya High Commission in Pretoria for appropriate assistance,” it added.

The advisory comes amid rising diplomatic tension in the region following reports of violence and anti-foreigner sentiment in some parts of South Africa.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government of Nigeria has demanded urgent accountability from South African authorities following the deaths of two Nigerians and reports of anti-foreigner protests.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government raised the issue during a meeting in Abuja with South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner, Lesoli Machele.

“It was reported that on 21 April 2026, Nnaemeka Matthew Andrew Ekpeyong died while in the custody of the Tshwane Metro Police Department,” the ministry said.

It added that “before his death, he reportedly sustained injuries attributed to personnel of the South African National Defence Force.”

On a second case, the ministry stated that “on 25 April 2026, Kelvin Chidiebere Amaramiro died at Livingstone Hospital in the Eastern Cape following an alleged assault by SANDF personnel.”

The Nigerian government also expressed concern over what it described as growing hostility toward foreigners.

“The Government of Nigeria notes with concern the ongoing protests in some parts of South Africa, requesting foreigners, especially blacks, to leave the country,” it said.

It further warned against incitement by groups linked to anti-immigrant rhetoric.

Nigeria demanded full investigations into the deaths and accountability where wrongdoing is established.

Responding, South Africa’s Acting High Commissioner assured that Pretoria would relay Nigeria’s concerns to the appropriate authorities, noting that steps would be taken “to ensure continuous peaceful relations between both countries.
