Catherine Louise “Katey” Sagal (born January 19, 1954) is an American actress and singer. She is best known for her roles as Peg Bundy on Married… with Children, Turanga Leela on Futurama, Cate Hennessy on 8 Simple Rules, Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy, and Louise Goldufski-Conner on The Conners. Over her career, she has received several award nominations and won a Golden Globe for her work on Sons of Anarchy.

Biography

Sagal was born in Los Angeles to a family involved in show business. Her mother, Sara Zwilling (also known as Sara Macon), was a singer, producer, and television writer who passed away in 1975. Her father, Boris Sagal, was a television director and a Russian-Jewish immigrant, while her mother had Amish roots. In 1977, her father married dancer and actress Marge Champion, but he died in an accident in 1981. Three of Sagal’s siblings—her twin sisters Jean and Liz, and her brother Joey—are actors. Her other brother, David, is an attorney married to actress McNally Sagal. The family grew up in Brentwood.

Her godfather is Norman Lear, a well-known sitcom producer and writer. In 2016, Sagal and Lear shared that he not only became her godfather but also introduced her parents to each other. Sagal has said she is “culturally Jewish” but did not have a formal religious upbringing.

Sagal graduated from Palisades High School and then attended the California Institute of the Arts until 1972.

Musical career

Sagal started her career as a singer and songwriter. In 1973, she sang backup for artists like Bob Dylan, Etta James, and Tanya Tucker. In 1976, she was part of The Group with No Name and contributed to their album Moon over Brooklyn, credited as “Katie Sagal.” She also provided backing vocals for Gene Simmons’ solo album in 1978, Molly Hatchet’s Take No Prisoners in 1981, and Olivia Newton-John’s 1985 single “Soul Kiss.”

She joined the Harlettes, Bette Midler’s backup singers, in 1978 and returned to the group from 1982 to 1983.

Sagal performed the song “It’s the Time for Love” for the film Silent Rage (1982) with Chuck Norris. While filming Valley Girl in 1983, she was scheduled to sing at The Central, and her name appears on the venue’s posted schedule. She also sang “Loose Cannons,” the theme song for the 1990 film starring Gene Hackman and Dan Aykroyd.

Sagal released her first solo album, Well…, on April 19, 1994. Her second album, Room, came out on June 1, 2004.

In the early 2010s, Sagal contributed to the Sons of Anarchy soundtrack, working with the show’s house band, The Forest Rangers. Their songs appeared on several soundtrack albums and singles for the series.

Personal life

Sagal was married to musician Freddie Beckmeier from 1978 to 1981, and to drummer and actor Jack White from 1993 to 2000. In 2004, she married writer and producer Kurt Sutter in a private ceremony at their home in Los Feliz, Los Angeles. They have a daughter, Esmé Louise, who was born in 2007 through a surrogate.

In 1991, while working on Married… with Children, Sagal became pregnant unexpectedly, and the writers included her pregnancy in the show’s storyline. Sadly, in October 1991, she had an emergency caesarean section in her seventh month, resulting in the stillbirth of her daughter. To avoid causing her more distress, the show’s producers decided to treat the pregnancy as a “dream sequence” and mentioned it only briefly. Later, Sagal and Jack White had two children: a daughter, Sarah Grace, in 1994, and a son, Jackson James White, in 1996. Because of her earlier loss, the writers chose not to include her later pregnancies in the show, instead explaining her absences with a subplot about Peg traveling the world. When Peg did appear, Sagal’s midsection was hidden, and she was often shown sitting or talking to family members by phone.

Losing her stillborn daughter Ruby inspired Sagal to write the lyrics for “(You) Can’t Hurry the Harvest.” She recorded the song for her debut album, Well…, released in April 1994.

In June 2016, the Human Rights Campaign released a tribute video for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. In the video, Sagal and others shared the stories of those who lost their lives.
