Kano police arrest man for attacking mother, recover gun

Police in Kano have arrested a 25-year-old man, Ididiong James, for allegedly attacking his mother and unlawfully possessing an English Beretta pistol with eight rounds of ammunition.

State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this on Wednesday in Kano in a statement, explaining that on January 25, 2026, at about 7:30 pm, officers from the Panshekara Division responded to a distress call and found James assaulting his mother at their residence in Panshekara Quarters.

The suspect reportedly fled the scene on the arrival of the police, but his mother handed over the pistol and ammunition, stating that she had found them in her son’s bag and had refused to return them to him. She also noted that her son’s behaviour had changed after returning from a New Year celebration.

James was later arrested and is currently in police custody. The Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, commended the mother for her courage and advised parents to closely monitor their children.

CP Bakori said, “The actions of this mother are commendable, and we appreciate her bravery in standing up against her son’s violent behaviour.

“We also caution parents to monitor their children’s activities and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities.”
