Kano Commences Distribution Of 90,000 Bags Of Fertiliser To Farmers

The Kano Government has commenced the distribution of 90,000 bags of subsidised fertilisers to farmers across the 44 local government areas and 848 political wards of the state for the 2026 wet farming season.

Flagging off the exercise on Thursday, Governor Abba Yusuf said the initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Yusuf stated that each local government area would receive three truckloads of fertilisers, with 70 beneficiaries allocated from each ward. He noted that while a bag sells for N50,000 in the open market, his administration, in partnership with local councils, has subsidised the fertilisers by 50 per cent, adding that farmers would be able to buy each bag for N25,000.

“Agriculture remains one of the cornerstones of our development agenda,” the governor said.

He added that over the past three years, his government had implemented several programmes to revitalise the sector, including quality farm inputs, improved crop production techniques, pest control measures and other interventions to boost productivity.

According to him, the consistent supply of subsidised inputs has led to higher crop yields, reduced food prices, a boost in rural employment and stronger food security in the state.

Yusuf, who announced the setting up of a committee to oversee the distribution of the fertilisers, commended the security agencies in the state for their role in maintaining peace and for supporting the government’s programmes.

Kano Hands Over NWDC HQ

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has officially handed over the North-West Development Commission’s temporary headquarters while donating two official vehicles to support its takeoff.

The handover was led by his excellency, Governor Abba Yusuf, alongside the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh; the Minister of State for Regional Development, Uba Maigari; the Permanent Secretary; and the board and management of the commission.

While handing over the temporary headquarters, Governor Yusuf of Kano State charges the commission to ensure equitable distribution of projects across the seven states in the northwest region.

“I want to assure you that Kano, on behalf of the seven states in the north-west region, will accord the north-west development commission all the necessary support and cooperation it may require to execute its programmes and projects,” he said.

In their separate submissions, the two ministers expressed gratitude to the Kano State Government and others who contributed to the takeoff of the commission while assuring that it will play a pivotal role in improving healthcare delivery, agriculture and curbing youths’ unemployment through skills acquisition.

“I want to thank and appreciate Kano State for its support in the takeoff of the North-West Development Commission,” said the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh.

However, the minister of state for regional development, Uba Maigari, urged the governments of the region not to view the commission as a competitor.

While assuring the use of the temporary headquarters for a successful takeoff, the governing board of the North-West Development Commission expressed appreciation to the Kano State government for its support.

The North-West Development Commission, created by President Bola Tinubu in 2024, will focus on delivering sustainable development across the seven states in the region.
