Maryam: It’s true, there’s a duality to our family history. Personally, I’ll say I’ve experienced the bitter sweet reality called life. Although I was young when my father passed on alhamdulillah, hearing her father’s legacy of fighting for democracy I believe instilled in me a sense of responsibility and a commitment to giving back.
Interviewer: Speaking of your father, his role in shaping Nigerian politics is undeniable. Some say your family are the Kennedys of Nigeria! How has his legacy influenced your own path?
Maryam: His dedication to service has been a constant inspiration. While others might see our family as the “Kennedys of Nigeria,” I see a family driven by a genuine desire to make a difference. As my father’s daughter, charity work became second nature to me.
Interviewer: You mentioned “charity work.” Can you elaborate on your approach to philanthropy?
Maryam: For me, true giving happens quietly, without fanfare. I don’t believe in grand gestures for the gram. My focus is on supporting individuals and causes close to my heart, often through personal connections. We all deserve opportunities to thrive, regardless of where we start in life. When they became part of our household, I saw that potential, and we embarked on a path together. Providing access to education was a natural step, and witnessing their successes has been one of life’s greatest rewards. This experience has solidified my commitment to fostering meaningful connections and empowering others to reach their full potential.
Interviewer: You spoke about helping two individuals who assist you achieve fulfilling personal milestones, like dream weddings. Could you elaborate on those experiences?
Maryam: Witnessing their joy was one of the most fulfilling moments of my life. It wasn’t just about the beautiful and lit celebrations, but also about giving them a chance to start their own families with a strong foundation. Speaking of celebrating milestones, one of my girls is actually getting married in March! And I would be absolutely honored if you and your team could join us in celebrating her union. It would mean the world to witness the start of what I can only term an exciting chapter in her life, all together. Sharing in that joy, surrounded by loved ones, will be truly beautiful, I promise.
