‘I liken it to a cop,’ says angry Walmart shopper who refuses receipt checks until chain makes major policy change

A WALMART SHOPPER has called out the retailer for its receipt checking policy, highlighting the unfair treatment of their customers.

A customer took to X (formerly known as Twitter) after a viral video showed the extreme lengths a Walmart employee went to check a family’s receipt.

“NEVER stop for the Walmart receipt checker. If they want to stop theft then bring back the cashiers,” a user named Rambo (@RambosCorner) explained.

“We are NOT their cashiers AND their Loss Prevention. They have no right to stop you. Just keep walking.”

Another user explained that they followed the receipt policy on occasion if the line was not too long.

“I don’t mind flashing a receipt, but if there are a few people waiting to have them checked, I just breeze on by. Not waiting in line to prove that I’ve paid for what I’m leaving with.”

However, Rambo felt like it was a great injustice to customers, as it could insinuate that they did something wrong.

“I liken it to a cop walking up to me randomly in the street asking for ID when I’ve done nothing wrong. I won’t comply there either lol,” he said.

The conversation was sparked after a video surfaced on social media of a Walmart employee seemingly chasing after a couple to check their receipt.

The two were seen using a stroller to carry out their items without bags.

The people captioned the video saying they were forced to show their receipt and the employee had pushed their cart.

“We checked out at the register & this man ran from self-checkout and stopped our cart and held us against our will,” the video caption said. 

“Before this video, he pushed the cart into my husband while Yaneli and Lorenzo were in the cart.”

At one point the employee was spotted physically blocking the family from leaving the store.

One of the shoppers in the video can be heard saying, “You’re about to be sued.”

It is unclear from the video what led to the confrontation, and whether Walmart staff may have had evidence that the shoppers had done anything wrong.

However, Tonya Krause-Phelan, a criminal law expert from the Cooley Law School, pointed out that customers do not have to follow receipt check policies.

“In public stores, as a general rule, you can refuse to show that receipt,” she told ABC news affiliate WZZM.

But there are consequences to doing so.

“The flip side is, if the store has reason to believe that you may have stolen something or are about to steal something, they actually can detain you until law enforcement arrives,” Krause-Phelan said.
