Grand Forks Air Force Base on lockdown after ‘shot fired near medical clinic’

A US Air Force base is on lockdown following reports of a possible active shooter on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for the Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota confirmed to The U.S. Sun that the entire base is on lockdown.

“Nobody is coming in or out until we clear the scene,” the spokesperson said.

In a Facebook post, the base shared that security forces received a report of a gunshot near the medical clinic and base exchange.

The lockdown was ordered “out of an abundance of caution.”

As of 2:30 pm, no injuries have been reported and police are doing door-to-door sweeps.

Senator Scott Meyer told the Associated Press he was walking to his car around 12:45 pm after having lunch at the bowling alley on base when he saw three or four police cars with the lights on at the commissary.

He said he thought there was a medical emergency at first but noticed the barricades on the road as he was driving off the base.

There were two other cars stopped at the base gate and that’s when Meyer said he heard a lockdown announcement for an active shooter over the loudspeakers.

“It keeps going across the speakers of the base, and you’re like — if that doesn’t make the hair on your neck stand up, it’s a creepy noise, and it was every about five minutes,” he said.

Meyer said he sat in his car for nearly two hours seeing “quite a lineup” at the gate.

Roughly 20 minutes after the loudspeakers made the final announcement, gate security pulled the barricades out, said Meyer.

Security checked and scanned IDs as people left and conducted car searches.

“I had all my four doors of my pickup opened, my console, my glove compartment, my end gate, my toolboxes,” said Meyer.

“I mean, they were doing a full search.”

An “all clear” was reported at the base just before 5:00 pm.

“Grand Forks, as with all Department of Defense installations, continually monitors the threats against its people, resources, and facilities and implements appropriate security measures,” said the GFAFB Public Affairs Chief in a statement.
