Gaza: UK Suspends British-Nigerian Minister for Accusing Israel of Genocide

A British-Nigerian minister, MP Kate Osamor, has been suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party pending an investigation after she accused Israel of committing ‘genocide’ on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day.

Ms. Osamor, the MP for Edmonton, sparked controversy by claiming in her weekly newsletter that Gaza should be added to the list of recent genocides. This statement came as she signed the Holocaust Education Trust’s commemoration book in Westminster, showing her support for Holocaust Memorial Day.

Her social media post stated, “Tomorrow is Holocaust Memorial Day, an international day to remember the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, the millions of other people murdered under Nazi persecution of other groups, and more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and now Gaza.”

The Board of Deputies, the Jewish Labour Movement, and the Holocaust Educational Trust reacted to her controversial remarks, leading to her suspension by the Chief Whip of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

The suspension has raised discussions about the boundaries of political speech and the complexities of addressing sensitive historical and contemporary issues in international politics.
