Four die, 53 injured in separate Kano road crashes

The Federal Road Safety Corps, Kano Sector Command, has confirmed the death of four persons and 53 others injured in separate road crashes in Kano.

The Public Relations Officer of the Sector Command, Abdullahi Labaran, confirmed the figures in a statement on Saturday.

According to the statement, the first incident occurred on Friday, April 17, 2026, around 10:20pm along the Eastern Bypass, at General Muhammadu Buhari Interchange, Hotoro, Kano.

“The crash involved a DAF trailer with registration number MAF 284XA, loaded with animals, goods, and passengers. The vehicle was reportedly en route from Wudil Market, Kano State, heading to Asaba in Delta State when the unfortunate incident occurred.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the driver lost control of the vehicle due to over-speeding while approaching the interchange flyover, leading to the crash.

“A total of 59 male adults were involved in the crash. Out of this number, 33 sustained varying degrees of injuries, 24 were rescued unhurt, while two persons lost their lives,” he said.

According to the statement, the injured victims were evacuated to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, for medical attention, while efforts were ongoing to manage the crash scene and ensure normal traffic flow.

Labaran said the second crash involved two vehicles, including a DAF trailer loaded with animals, goods, and passengers, which departed from Wudil Market en route to Lagos State on Saturday.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the driver lost control due to over-speeding while approaching the T-Junction, resulting in a collision.

“A total of 30 male adults were involved in the crash, out of which 20 sustained varying degrees of injuries, eight were rescued unhurt, while two persons lost their lives.

“The injured victims were evacuated to Wudil General Hospital for medical attention, while the obstruction caused by the crash has been successfully cleared to restore free flow of traffic.”

The Sector Commander, Idris Mohammed Lawal, expressed deep concern over the persistent violation of safety regulations, particularly the dangerous practice of conveying passengers in trailers meant for goods and animals.

Lawal strongly condemned over-speeding and overloading, emphasising that such acts significantly increase the risk of fatal crashes. He called on drivers and transport operators to strictly adhere to traffic rules and regulations, avoid excessive speed, and desist from the illegal carriage of passengers in trailers.
