A Lagos-based non-governmental organisation, January Twenty-Seven Foundation, on Saturday, empowered over 100 widows with equipment and financial assistance after taking them through skill acquisition training.
The founder of the foundation, Mrs Doyinsola Olaiya, said the initiative aligned with its mission to enhance the quality of life for widows in urban and rural areas throughout Nigeria.
The widows, according to the statement on Tuesday, received equipment and financial assistance to kickstart their entrepreneurial endeavours.
“Essential items, such as deep freezers, umbrellas, and monetary support, were provided to enable the widows to embark on a fresh start,” the statement said.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the foundation, Mr Femi Olaiya, said the foundation was committed to empowering widows “through initiatives fostering self-sufficiency, emotional well-being, and advocacy for their rights.”
Commending the foundation’s efforts, the Lead Pastor of Greater Heights Baptist Church, Rev. Olakunle Sunday, said, “January Twenty-Seven Foundation addresses a critical societal challenge.”
Sunday praised the foundation for contributing significantly to poverty alleviation in Nigeria by empowering these widows.
He emphasised that widows, often among the most vulnerable in society, face the daunting task of raising children without substantial support.
