Former Congress spokesperson Rohan Gupta made a significant move by officially joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday. His defection was highlighted by his critique of the Congress party’s internal contradictions and loss of credibility.
Joined by Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri and BJP’s National General Secretary Vinod Tawde in New Delhi, Rohan Gupta’s decision marked a shift in his political allegiance after being associated with the Congress for nearly 15 years.
In his resignation letter last month, Gupta pointed out instances where he felt insulted within the Congress ranks and specifically mentioned a leader in the party’s communication wing. He also expressed his disappointment over the party’s absence at the Ram temple consecration ceremony in Ayodhya, opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and alliances with parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
Embracing the BJP’s vision of a developed India by 2047, Rohan Gupta commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi‘s leadership and expressed his support for the party’s agenda.
Within the Gujarat Congress, Gupta’s political journey was marked by controversies and a perceived high-handed approach towards fellow party members. His rise in the political circles was often linked to his closeness to the late Congress leader Ahmed Patel.
Coming from a political background, with his father Rajkumar Gupta having served as a legislator from Ahmedabad, Rohan Gupta’s decision to switch sides reflects the evolving landscape of party politics in the country.
