Naija News reports that the incident which comes just a day after workers in the state celebrated International Workers’ Day, happened around 3:00 a.m., when flames took over the building and burned down offices, equipment, important files, and other items used for union activities.
People living nearby said the fire spread quickly before emergency workers could bring it under control. By morning, the structure had been badly damaged, with most parts reduced to ashes.
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed, but some residents believe it may be connected to unstable electricity supply, especially sudden power surges that have been happening in the area.
The Sokoto State chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdullahi Aliyu, reacted to the incident with sadness, saying the loss has greatly affected the labour movement in the state.
“This is a painful loss for the labour movement in Sokoto. The extent of destruction is enormous, and it comes at a time we were just reflecting on the significance of workers’ welfare and unity,” he said.
As at the time of filing this report, the fire had not been fully put out, and the building had been completely destroyed.
