FG Moves To Streamline Security Outfits, Sets Up Inter-ministerial Committee

The Federal Government of Nigeria has inaugurated an inter-ministerial committee to review the proliferation and rationalisation of security and para-military agencies across the country.

The committee was inaugurated by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, as part of efforts to streamline Nigeria’s security framework.

Akume, who was represented by Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, said the initiative is designed to address the growing number of unaccredited quasi-security outfits and improve coordination among agencies.

According to the SGF, the increasing number of security and auxiliary agencies has led to duplication of roles, jurisdictional conflicts, and operational inefficiencies.

He noted that the committee’s report would guide government decisions on restructuring and strengthening the sector.

The panel is expected to: Compile a comprehensive inventory of all security and para-military outfits, Examine their legal and operational mandates, Identify overlaps and areas of conflict, Assess effectiveness of emerging security outfits, Review coordination mechanisms among agencies.

The committee will also recommend reforms aimed at improving accountability and reducing redundancy within the system.

The committee is further mandated to propose policy, legal, and institutional measures, including possible mergers, harmonisation, reclassification, or dissolution of agencies where necessary.

Its work will also focus on aligning Nigeria’s security operations with national priorities and global best practices.

Members of the committee were drawn from major security and government institutions, including: Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Police Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Office of the National Security Adviser.

The committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report with actionable recommendations within an approved timeframe.
