FG Meets SSANU, NASU To Resolve Ongoing Strike

The Federal Government is making a fresh attempt to resolve the ongoing strike by university workers, as it has invited leaders of two major unions to a meeting scheduled for Monday.

Naija News reports that the invitation was sent to the Joint Action Committee, which includes the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and Allied Institutions. The meeting is expected to take place with the Minister of Education in Abuja, as efforts continue to convince the unions to call off their industrial action.

A source familiar with the development confirmed to Punch that the government is hoping to present a better offer during the discussion. The source said the meeting is part of renewed efforts to settle the dispute and restore normal activities in federal universities.

The strike began on May 1, 2026, after both unions directed their members to withdraw services nationwide. Their decision followed what they described as delays by the government in concluding talks over allowances and other welfare issues.

Before the strike started, the unions had written to the Minister of Education, stating that negotiations had dragged on without a clear outcome.

They also noted that although an earlier circular announcing a 30 percent increase in a key allowance was withdrawn, no replacement proposal had been presented.

Union leaders explained that members had grown frustrated with the slow pace of discussions and had instructed them to take action if no agreement was reached by the end of April. When that deadline passed without any new offer, they proceeded with the strike as earlier planned.

They maintained that the government’s withdrawal of the allowance circular did not address the main concerns raised during negotiations. According to them, the absence of a fresh proposal left the issues unresolved, making the strike unavoidable.
