Fela Anikulapo makes history as first African in Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Legendary Nigerian musician, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has become the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Fela will be recognised in the early influence category alongside Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Gram Parsons, and Celia Cruz.

The honourees were announced during a broadcast of American Idol on Monday night.

Nigerian-born British singer, Sade Adu, will also be honoured in the performance category.

Other nominees, including Shakira, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, New Edition, and Pink, did not make the final list.

The selection was decided by votes from more than 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for 14 November at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

Earlier in the year, Fela was also recognised as the first African musician to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award.
