Explosion rocks FBI training facility in Irvine with 16 hurt in mishap as bomb squad and SWAT team trained in California

SIXTEEN people have been injured in an explosion at an FBI training facility in Irvine, California.

The blast rocked the facility after a bomb went off as a Special Weapons and Tactics team was training inside a building.

Fifteen of the victims were rushed to the hospital, including two officers who suffered serious injuries to their legs, one whom required surgery.

A third person had an injured back, Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.

One officer drove themselves to the hospital.

Due to the vicinity of the blast, thirteen victims suffered from dizziness and ringing in their ears.

At the scene, one of the buildings was surrounded by police tape and vehicles.

Men in uniform and others stood near an army vehicle at the sight of the explosion.

FBI agents in yellow boots are also marking and further investigating the scene.

Police said that the department’s Special Weapons and Tactics team was doing their annual training inside the facility when the explosion occurred around 1 pm.

Sky5 footage captured a robot situated outside of that building as some debris could be seen strewn near the entrance, according to CW affiliate KTLA.

Video from the scene showed investigators focusing on a bunker-style building while also examining a pair of bomb squad robots and other equipment, according to The Orange County Register.

No FBI agents were injured in the explosion.

“A training incident that occurred today at the FBI’s training facility in Irvine with law enforcement partners resulted in some injuries and is under investigation,” said a statement from the FBI.

Most of the injured SWAT members have been released from the hospital, Sheriff’s Sargent Frank Gonzalez affirmed, according to ABC affiliate WABC.

No deaths have been reported so far.
