West Brom legend Andy Johnson has thrown his weight behind Super Eagles striker Josh Maja staying at The Hawthorns beyond this summer, describing him as the most complete forward currently at the club.

Johnson, who enjoyed a distinguished playing career at West Brom, made the appeal as uncertainty continues to surround Maja’s future.

The 27-year-old’s three-year contract — signed when he joined from Bordeaux in the summer of 2023 — is set to expire at the end of this month.

Speaking to the Express and Star via Football League World, Johnson was effusive in his praise for the Nigerian’s technical qualities.

“Would I like Josh to stay? Of course I would. He links up the play better than anyone at the football club, between the midfield and the strikers. His touch n ine times out of ten is sensational; he can flip balls in behind.

“He really does spot it. If he gets a partnership with a winger who stands the ball up for him, he can attack it, and he’ll get goals,” Johnson said.

Maja scored three goals in his final nine appearances for the Baggies last season, bringing his overall contribution at the club to 22 goal involvements in 81 matches across all competitions.
