The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission; and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission have educated students of the University of Lagos, Akoka, on data protection.
The two anti-graft agencies engaged with the students on Saturday during a cybersecurity awareness workshop organised by H’QUBE Consulting Limited.
The workshop with the theme “Impact of Cybersecurity Awareness in Combating Cybercrimes,” held at NITHUB, UNILAG and it attracted stakeholders and participants concerned about the escalating financial losses resulting from cyberattacks.
The Lagos Zonal Commander of the EFCC, Michael Wetkas, warned the students against compromising the security of their data, particularly their National Identification Number and Bank Verification Number, urging them to remain vigilant against cybercriminals’ tactics.
Wetkas said, “All they (cyber fraudsters) need now is a laptop, network and knowledge. Crimes have no border. Unlike before, you have to be there physically to perpetrate it. The EFCC is watching. If you see something, say something, then we will do something to arrest the criminals.”
Ezike Onyema, representing the State Zonal Head of the ICPC, reiterated the importance of data protection, urging participants to exercise caution in their social media activities. He said, “We need to be safe. Protect your BVN. Your BVN must be protected, don’t let it out.”
Earlier in April, EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, called on youths to shun cybercrime and other forms of criminality.
The EFCC chairman made this call in Benin, Edo State while speaking on a programme ‘Youth Empowerment Against Cybercrime’ organised by Cybersecurity Education Initiatives, a non-profit organisation dedicated to cybercrime prevention.
He said, “Don’t be tempted or lured by the ostentatious lifestyle of other youths because the Commission will continue to arrest and prosecute anyone that is involved.”
