Doctors are not objects to vent systemic frustrations upon – Nigerian doctor writes after a man who assaulted him following the death of his mum apologizes to him on a national daily

A Nigerian doctor at the University College Hospital UCH in Ibadan, Nelson Udeme, has reacted after a man who assaulted him following the death of his mum apologised to him on a national daily. 

Olanrewaju Tajudeen had lost his mum who was at the High Dependence Unit and while reacting to the sad news, descended on one of the doctors. He was arrested and made to tender a public apology.

In his letter of apology addressed to UCH’s Chief Medical Director, Olanrewaju promised that his outburst would never happen again.

“I, Mr Oludaisi Olanrewaju Tajudeen, hereby apologise to the Chief Medical Director, the management of the hospital, Association of Resident Doctors, Dr Nelson Udeme of the University College Hospital for my emotional outburst at the doctor on duty at the High dependency unit of UCH following the death of my mother, Mrs Oludaisi Busurat.

I also withdraw any verbal threat to him and any other healthcare worker. I plead for the understanding and mercy of the UCH.

I promise this will not repeat itself again.”

While accepting the apology, Udeme pointed out that doctors should not be objects to vent systemic frustrations upon. He also mentioned that he lost his mum as well to a failed health system.
