Detained Soldier Dies In Army Custody After Alleged Medical Neglect

Fresh information has emerged on the death of a detained soldier, Corporal Bala Hudu, in the custody of the Nigerian Army, with sources alleging medical neglect and poor treatment of soldiers in military detention facilities.

Hudu, with service number 09/6/44/4682, was attached to the 223 Light Tank Battalion under 8 Division.

He had reportedly been in detention since October 2023 over an allegation described as “self-defence.”

According to information obtained by SaharaReporters, Hudu’s health began to fail in April 2026 after months in detention.

Sources said Hudu fell ill on April 4 alongside other detainees who tried to seek medical attention at a military facility but were allegedly turned away.

One source said, “On the 4th of April, four of us went to the medical centre and the Medical Commander refused to attend to us. We were all malingering and we were brought back to the guardroom.”

The source alleged that the detainees’ complaints were dismissed as fake, leaving them without treatment despite signs of illness.

The document further claimed that Hudu’s condition worsened over the following days while requests for medical assistance were ignored.

“Subsequently, his sickness continued and even he gave money for the Military Police (MP) to buy tabs for him, they refused, claiming it is self-medication,” the source said.

Soldier Confirmed Dead April 17

As Hudu’s condition deteriorated, fellow detainees reportedly became alarmed.

One source said, “On Sunday, being April 12, 2026, his health condition worsened, and he was purging and vomiting.”

The detainees alleged that no immediate action was taken until they protested.

“But until the sixteenth, after a lot of aggressive actions from us the detainees, they were forced to take him to the hospital,”

By the time Hudu was taken for treatment on April 16, it was reportedly too late.

“Then we heard that he is dead,” the source added.

Hudu was confirmed dead on April 17, 2026, nearly two weeks after he first reported illness.

In a separate case, sources also raised concern over the condition of Private Solomon Gideon, with service number 15NA/73/1093, attached to the 26 Battalion under Headquarters 8 Division.

Gideon is reportedly still in detention and is said to be “almost blind” due to worsening health while in custody.

Sources alleged that despite his condition, military authorities were pushing for stricter disciplinary measures against him.

He was initially punished with the forfeiture of two years’ salary over what was described as a “miscellaneous offence.”

However, sources said senior officers rejected the punishment as too lenient.

“They said the punishment is too low and that he should be retried,” the source said.

Concerns Over Military Detention

The cases have raised renewed concerns over the treatment of detained soldiers and the transparency of disciplinary processes within the Nigerian Army.

Sources alleged that some internal disciplinary procedures are handled in secrecy and may be used to intimidate or punish subordinates disproportionately.
