Darrell Wayne Lukas (September 2, 1935 – June 28, 2025) was an American horse trainer who was inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame. He won 20 Breeders’ Cup races and 15 Triple Crown races, received five Eclipse Awards, and his horses earned 25 year-end Eclipse Awards. In 2007, Lukas was also inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame.

Biography and Education
Lukas was born on September 2, 1935, in Antigo, Wisconsin, where his family owned a farm. He developed an early interest in horses. While studying at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, he joined the Kappa Sigma fraternity. After earning a master’s degree in education from the same university, he taught at Logan High School in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and served as head basketball coach.
Career
Lukas started training quarter horses in California in 1968. Over the next ten years, he trained 24 world champions before switching to thoroughbreds. He earned his first win as a thoroughbred trainer on October 20, 1977, at Santa Anita Park. Lukas was the first trainer to earn over $100 million in purse money and was the top money winner 14 times. Throughout his career, he earned more than $300 million in purses.

Lukas first drew major attention in 1980 when he won the Preakness Stakes with Codex. His horses went on to win the Kentucky Derby four times, the Preakness Stakes seven times, and the Belmont Stakes four times. In 1995, his horses Thunder Gulch and Timber Country won all three Classic races, making Lukas the first trainer to sweep the Triple Crown Classics with two different horses in one season. In 2013, he surpassed Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons for the most Triple Crown race wins, reaching 14. In 2024, at age 88, Lukas became the oldest trainer to win a Triple Crown race when Seize the Grey won the Preakness Stakes. This marked his fifteenth Triple Crown race win and his seventh Preakness victory.
Lukas set a record by winning 20 Breeders’ Cup races. Fillies he trained won the Kentucky Oaks five times. Three of his horses—Lady’s Secret in 1986, Criminal Type in 1990, and Charismatic in 1999—received the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year. In total, 25 of his horses won different Eclipse Awards.
Death
Lukas contracted COVID-19 in 2020 but recovered from the illness.
On June 22, 2025, Lukas’s family and Churchill Downs announced that he had health problems and would not return to training. He was hospitalized with a severe MRSA infection and chose not to pursue aggressive treatment, deciding instead to return home for hospice care. His thoroughbreds were transferred to his longtime assistant, Sebastian Nicholl, who continued as their trainer until the next month.
Lukas died at his home in Louisville, Kentucky, on June 28, 2025, at the age of 89.
