Customs officers wives plant 1,000 trees in Kebbi

The Customs Officers’ Wives Association, Kebbi State Chapter, on Thursday embarked on a tree-planting exercise and donated waste management materials as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and a cleaner ecosystem.

Speaking during the exercise, the Chairperson of COWA, Kebbi Command, described the initiative as a significant step towards securing a healthier environment for future generations.

“Today, we are not just planting trees; we are planting hope, sustainability, and a healthier future for our environment and our nation,” she said.

The exercise forms part of a nationwide campaign by COWA to plant 1,000 trees across Nigeria, with the Kebbi chapter contributing 100 trees to the initiative.

The chairperson noted that the programme reflects the association’s commitment to environmental protection under its Green Initiative, adding that tree planting must be complemented with proper care.

“As we carry out this exercise, let us remember that planting a tree is just the beginning. We must nurture and protect them so they can grow and benefit generations to come,” she emphasised.

She also acknowledged the leadership of the National President of COWA, Mrs Kikelomo Adeiniyi, for driving the initiative across the country.

“I would like to specially recognise our able President… whose leadership and vision continue to drive this impactful initiative across the nation,” she said.

In addition to the tree planting, the association donated 12 large dustbins to the Kebbi Area Command to enhance proper waste disposal, particularly plastic waste management. Watering containers were also provided to support the maintenance of the newly planted trees.

The chairperson commended the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller M.M. Ibrahim, for his support in ensuring the success of the programme.

“Your dedication and encouragement have made today possible, and we are truly grateful,” she said.

She urged stakeholders and residents to take collective responsibility for protecting the environment, stressing that sustainable practices are essential for national development.

“Together, we can make a difference. Together, we can build a greener and more sustainable Nigeria,” she added.

In his remarks, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Mahmoud Matawalle Ibrahim, commended the initiative.

He, however, assured of the continuous support of the command to COWA in the state.

The event drew senior customs officers, members of the association, and other stakeholders, who reiterated the importance of environmental conservation and community participation in achieving lasting impact.
