Chad, 55, started his trial for the 2019 murders of his ex-wife Tammy Daybell and Lori’s two children on April 1.

He is facing several charges including first-degree murder, insurance fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and grand theft in connection to the deaths of Lori’s children.

Alex Cox, Lori’s brother, was involved in the July 2019 death of her fourth husband, Charles Vallow.

At the time, Alex said he shot and killed his brother-in-law but claimed it was an act of self-defense, according to NBC News.

He suddenly died a few months later in December 2019, at age 51, and a medical examiner reported he died of natural causes due to a blood clot in his arteries.

The court discussed a November 24, 2019, blessing given to Alex by Chad.

The 15-minute audio was played to the court, according to East Idaho News.

In the audio, Chad was heard saying that Alex had entered the Church of the Firstborn and the blessing he received had been authorized by Jesus Christ, according to East Idaho News.

Chad also described a close bond between Alex and his sister Lori.

“And you were selected to help protect your sister and helped her in numerous probations as a defender,” Chad said in the audio.

“You connected there and as she grew in power you were right there beside her, always.”

Prosecuting Attorney Lindsey Blake questioned Detective Nathan Duncan after the audio was played, according to East Idaho News.

The attorney asked Detective Duncan what stood out to him.

Ducan listed “The Church of the Firstborn” and the line that Alex had “already helped them,” as points that left an impression.

In the audio, Chad told Alex that he had “assisted” the couple but did not explain what that entailed.
