Group Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, says Nigeria is focused on closing the energy supply gap.
According to a statement by NNPCL’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, Kyari disclosed this in his remarks at Tuesday’s Leadership Dialogue Session at the ongoing CERAWeek Conference in Houston, United States.
Kyari revealed that 70 per cent of Nigeria and other sub-Saharan African countries lack access to clean cooking gas.
He stated that the African sub-region must first ascertain energy security before transition.
He stressed that Africa must address the energy supply gap as a prerequisite for energy transition.
According to him, gas is the easiest way of achieving energy transition.
“The world has seen all the challenges thrown up recently by geopolitical events. It is clear that before the energy transition, countries must first obtain security of energy supply in their countries.
“You cannot talk about energy security when it is not even available. In most of sub-Saharan Africa, 70 per cent of the population doesn’t have access to clean cooking fuels. Therefore, you must fill the supply gap first,” the GCEO stated.
He hinted that the Final Investment Decision for the $25 billion Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline, NMGP Project will be made by December 2024.
“We understand the arguments towards attaining energy transition, but gas is the cheapest way to achieve that. We see clear opportunities that gas creates.
“Today, we are building several trunk lines and other gas infrastructure to supply gas to several gas networks,” Kyari added.
