Authorities Call for Calm as Tension Grips Jos After Curfew Relaxation

Tension is rising across parts of Jos, the Plateau State capital, and its environs, barely twenty-four hours after the state government relaxed the forty-eight-hour curfew imposed on Jos North Local Government Area.

The Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North Local Government Area after a late Sunday deadly attack on the Ungwan Rukuba community, which left twenty-seven people dead.

In a statement after the attack, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Ramnap, said the curfew would take effect from midnight on March 29 to April 1, 2026.

According to the statement, the Governor of the State, Caleb Muftwang, condemned the killings, describing them as ‎” barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens” and assured the residents of counter measures to stop attacks and apprehend the perpetrators.

Security operatives have now been deployed to identified flashpoints across the city to maintain law and order and reassure residents.

Meanwhile, videos circulating on social media appear to show angry youths attacking passersby in different streets within the state capital, further heightening concerns.

A delegation from the Plateau State Government also moved around the city to assess the situation firsthand.

Speaking to journalists afterwards, officials urged residents to disregard unverified information and remain calm, as efforts continue to sustain peace in the area.
