The American International School Abuja has officially agreed to refund the tuition fees paid in advance by Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State, for his children’s education, according to sources.
In a letter sent to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the school acknowledged the sum of $845,852.84 that had been deposited in their bank account since September 7, 2021.
The school indicated that after deducting the educational services rendered, the net amount to be refunded to the state is $760,910.84.
As part of the ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering activities by the Bello family, the EFCC had initially requested the refund of the tuition fees.
Responding to the commission’s request, the school requested an official written demand from the EFCC with the authentic banking details for the refund process.
The American International School Abuja detailed that there would be no further additional fees expected for tuition as the students’ fees have been settled until their graduation from the school.
Through investigations, it was revealed that Yahaya Bello had transferred $720,000 from the Kogi State Government‘s coffers to pay in advance for his children’s school fees before leaving office.
The EFCC subsequently initiated legal proceedings against Ali Bello, a family member, over allegations of a N3 billion fraud involving money laundering and misappropriation.
Ali Bello, alongside other co-defendants, was arraigned at the Federal High Court on 18 counts related to the financial misconduct.
