‘Am I clocked in now?’ shopper says self-checkout’ change is over-the-top after being asked to ‘work for’ store

A ZARA shopper has fumed at the complex nature of the self-checkout.

The influencer joked that he was working for the fashion chain as he had to remove the security tags.

Amir Mohamed (@amirrors_world) documented his experience using the self-service machines while shopping in Miami, Florida.

He revealed that the machine recognized what was in his basket when he put it in the scanning area.

Amir said that the technology even picked up the colors and sizes of the items.

He paid for the items before being told he had to take the security tags off the clothes.

Amir quipped: “I really do work for you guys. Like am I clocked in now?”

He joked that he didn’t get an employee discount for the items.

Amir then lamented that he had to put the items in his bag.

TikTokers rushed to comment that the experience is the same at Zara stores worldwide.

Social media users said Amir should’ve said he was having a problem, prompting a staffer to help.

One commenter said: “Having to remove the tags yourself is crazy I’ve been to stores where putting it in the basket bit deactivates a security tag. [it] seems easier.”

But, shoppers said they would prefer to use the self-checkout instead of waiting in a long line.

Retailers such as Target have introduced policies designed to reduce waiting times at the self-checkout.

Some stores have rolled out a policy where shoppers can only check out 10 items or less at the self-service machines.

The policy has won over shoppers, who were particularly tired of long self-checkout lines.

One shopper claimed that Target workers eye shoppers carts like a ‘hawk’ to make sure they’re complying with the rule.

Others have claimed the rule is “stupid.”

Brett Glass said: “Target is doing something really stupid: limiting their self-checkout to 10 items or fewer.

“This is backing up the entire store and overburdening the human cashiers, of whom they don’t have enough.”

Evan Lee (@E_Lee51) shared a picture inside the store that showed long lines at the self-checkout.

He claimed that up to 20 people were in the line waiting to use the machines.

Christopher Laake (@cslaake) urged the chain to hire more cashiers as he lamented the moment when the machines spit out crumpled bills.
