ADC Faction Brave The Odds, Holds Convention As N/West APC Backs Tinubu

Despite the internal contradictions and legal battles rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC), the Senator David Mark-led executive of the party held its national convention in Abuja.

The convention was held as the Supreme Court fixed 22 April for the hearing of an appeal filed by Mark against a suit filed by Nafiu Bala, a former deputy national chairman of the party.

The appeal seeks to rectify the delisting of its executive officers by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Another faction of the party, led by Don Norman Obinna and six others, instituted the fresh case, dragging the party, INEC and six others before the court.

The convention ratified the Mark-led National Working Committee. It also expelled Nafiu Bala Gombe, alongside House of Representatives member Leke Abejide, and three other party members, namely Kenneth Ehiator, Stella Chukwu, and Elias Adiukwu.

Declaring the convention open, the national chairman, Mark, accused the ruling All Progressives Congress(APC) of mounting political pressure and attempting to stifle opposition voices.

“We can’t be intimidated,” Mark declared, insisting that the ADC would not bow to what he described as “tyranny and political pressure.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, in his remarks, warned the INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, that he “will not get away” with what he described as an illegal decision to disregard the leadership of the ADC led by David Mark.

Atiku maintained that the party followed due process in the emergence of Mark and other members of the leadership team.

He stressed that the party would resist any attempt to undermine its leadership, vowing to challenge what he termed the electoral commission’s illegality.

However, the Bala-led faction of ADC declared the ‘Suya’ national convention of the David Mark camp of the party null and void, having violated both the Electoral Act, 2026, and the 1999 Constitution.

At a press conference in Abuja, jointly addressed by the factional ADC national chairman, Bala and National leader, Leke, they describe their “purported suspension (expulsion) as a laughable phenomenon from an illegal group of people…”

Meanwhile, the North West zone of the APC reiterated its resolve to secure a sweeping electoral victory for President Bola Tinubu and all its candidates in the 2027 general elections.

The resolution followed the zone’s maiden meeting, held at its secretariat in Kaduna, weeks after its zonal congress on March 25, 2026.

The Zonal Publicity Secretary, Musa Mada, in a statement, said the meeting, which was presided over by the National Vice Chairman (North-West), Garba Muhammad, deliberated on measures to consolidate the region’s dominance as the highest vote-producing bloc in presidential elections since 1999.

On the other hand, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, paid a courtesy visit to the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Abdurrahman Dambazau, at the PDP headquarters, Wadata Plaza, Abuja.

Wike called on the National Working Committee, believed to be loyal to him, to intensify efforts to reclaim defected members and strengthen the party’s position as a formidable opposition force.

He also declared that PDP remains the principal opposition force, emphasising that the ADC cannot lay such a claim, having not secured electoral victories.

“My coming here this morning is to reassure you of my support for the members of the National Working Committee.  I’ve come here to pledge my support and my loyalty to all of you,” he said.

The PDP Chairman, Mohammed, welcomed the minister to the party’s National Headquarters, describing the visit as significant to the party’s progress.

He assured that the new leadership is committed to strengthening the PDP, supporting its aspirants and repositioning the party for success ahead of the 2027 general elections across the country.

In another development, Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has picked Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada as his preferred successor ahead of the 2027 elections.

The governor disclosed his choice of Wadada during a meeting with political appointees and heads of government agencies at the Government House, Lafia.

He said the decision to back Wadada, the senator representing Nasarawa West, was taken after extensive consultation that went beyond the state’s boundaries.

In the meantime, Minority Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ali Isa, resigned from PDP, citing internal crisis and alleged undemocratic practices within the party.

In a resignation letter April 14, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of Kindiyo Ward in Balanga Local Government Area of Gombe State, Isa said his decision takes immediate effect.

The lawmaker, who represents Balanga/Billiri Federal Constituency, said he took the decision after wide consultations with key stakeholders.

Similarly, a former governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, has officially resigned from the PDP.

The former governor, who ruled the state between 2009 and 2016, made this known in a letter addressed to the party chairman in Ward 7 in Ondo West Local Government Area.

Mimiko, who has largely been away from partisan politics, said in the resignation letter: “Speculations and inquiries about my membership status have made it necessary for me to clarify my position.

Also, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi state ended negotiations with the national leadership of APC over a possible defection to the ruling party.

Chairman of PDP, Bauchi state chapter, Sama’ila Adamu Burga, disclosed this at a press conference in Bauchi yesterday.

He said the governor had entered the talks following an invitation from the APC, which requested that he and other key political stakeholders, including lawmakers, Assembly members, and local government chairmen from Bauchi state, join the APC ahead of next year’s general election.

Burga said the move was framed as a step toward dialogue and inclusiveness, with both sides signalling a willingness to explore collaboration in good faith.

He said: “After careful and extensive considerations, the proposals put forward during the negotiations were ultimately not accepted by the APC leadership.”
