Actress Charlize Theron opens up about the night her mother k!lled her father

Charlize Theron has opened up about a traumatic childhood incident involving her father’s death, describing it as a life-altering moment that continues to shape her perspective.

In a recent interview, the Oscar-winning actress recalled how, at the age of 15, she and her mother were confronted by her father, who returned home intoxicated and acting violently. According to Theron, he forced his way into their home, creating a situation where they feared for their lives.

She recounted that she and her mother tried to hold a bedroom door shut as shots were fired through it. In response, her mo ther, Gerda Maritz, used a firearm to protect them, fatally shooting him. The incident was later ruled as self-defence.

Reflecting on the experience, Theron said she no longer feels defined by the trauma and is choosing to speak openly about it to support others affected by domestic violence.

She explained that sharing her story is part of a broader effort to help people who have gone through similar situations feel less isolated. Theron also noted that the experience influenced her outlook on life and her career, particularly her attraction to strong, resilient roles.

While acknowledging the severity of what happened, she emphasised that she has worked to process the event and move forward, using it as a source of strength rather than fear.
