Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president of Nigeria has slammed the present administration of President Bola Tinubu over the persisting insecurity across the nation.

Obasanjo in an interview with News Central Television said the growing killings and kidnappings in most parts of Nigeria are worrisome.

According to the former president, any government that fails to protect the lives and property of citizens does not have the right to remain in power.

Obasanjo said, “Let me tell you, the government that cannot give security of life and property of its citizens has no right of existence.”

The former president also queried the constitutional backing behind the fixing of salaries and benefits of the lawmakers of the National Assembly.

Obasanjo said members of the legislature also lack the right to fix their salaries, wages and benefits.

“The elected members of our National Assembly have no right to fix their own salary and their own emoluments.

“It’s not in our constitution for them to do that. It’s the revenue mobilisation and allocation commission that should do it,” Obasanjo stated.

Recall that the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) had in February disclosed that it had completed a new remuneration plan for political office holders in Nigeria.

RMAFC also said the new remuneration plan has been forwarded to the President through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) for approval.
