Court Grants El-Rufai Access to Medical Treatment While in ICPC Custody

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has secured permission from the Federal High Court in Kaduna to receive medical treatment while in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC.

The court granted the request on Wednesday during proceedings in the ongoing corruption and money laundering case involving the former governor and a co-defendant, Joel Adoga.

Justice Rilwan Aikawa, who presided over the matter, ruled that El-Rufai should be allowed access to medical attention for dental and eye treatment under strict supervision by the anti-graft agency.

The ruling followed an appeal by the defence team, which urged the court to permit the former governor to visit selected medical facilities in Abuja due to health concerns raised during the hearing.

According to the request presented before the court, El-Rufai sought approval to receive treatment at Mile Dental Clinic and Skipper Eye-Q Hospital in Abuja.

The judge subsequently directed the ICPC to escort the former governor to the medical facilities whenever necessary and return him to custody immediately after treatment.

The court further ordered that the movement of the defendant for medical purposes must remain under close monitoring by the commission at all times.

El-Rufai and Adoga are currently facing a 10-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering, possession of proceeds of corruption and unlawful conversion of funds.

The charges were filed under provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.

Both defendants had earlier pleaded not guilty to all the charges brought against them by the anti-corruption agency.

In a statement released after the proceedings, ICPC spokesman, John Odey, confirmed the development and stated that the commission would comply fully with the court’s directive while maintaining lawful custody of the former governor pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.

The court had earlier granted El-Rufai bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties in like sum. The administrative bail earlier granted to the second defendant was also adopted by the court.

The matter was later adjourned till May 7, 2026, for ruling on the application seeking variation of the bail conditions.
