2027: Atiku Breaks Silence as INEC Rejects Fresh Plot to Deregister ADC

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has responded to reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) rejected a fresh attempt to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), coming days after a Supreme Court ruling on the party.

According to a court document that has circulated widely, INEC challenged the legal basis of the application, arguing that it does not meet the constitutional requirements for deregistering a political party.

In its submission, the Commission stressed that its authority to deregister parties is not arbitrary or subject to political influence, but strictly guided by existing laws and constitutional provisions.

Reacting to the development, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, described the move to deregister the ADC as “a desperate and failed plot conceived in the shadows of fear.”

“What we are seeing is the collapse of a poorly executed political scheme aimed at weakening opposition voices.

The fact that INEC has exposed the legal deficiencies of this application speaks volumes. It reinforces what many Nigerians already believe, that this was never about legality, but about intimidation,” he said.

He further warned against attempts to stifle political competition, saying, “No democracy can thrive where those in power try to silence opposition through indirect means.

Today it is the ADC; tomorrow it could be any platform that refuses to conform. Nigeria is bigger than any government, and its democratic space must not be constrained by political insecurity.”

It will be recalled that the Supreme Court last week nullified a Court of Appeal ruling that had prevented the recognition of David Mark as the National Chairman of the ADC.
