The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has lost its final seat in the Senate after Senator Rufai Hanga, representing Kano Central, defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The announcement was made on Tuesday during plenary, as Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Hanga’s defection letter.

In his letter, Hanga cited lingering internal crises within the NNPP as the reason for his departure.

He explained that ongoing factional disputes and conflicting leadership directions had made it difficult for him to function effectively as a lawmaker, creating an unstable political atmosphere.

He said his decision came after wide consultations with his constituents and key political stakeholders, adding that the NDC aligns more closely with his political goals and vision for governance.
