Anglican bishop urges credible poll, transparent governance

The Diocesan Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ife, Olubunmi Akinlade, has called for credible elections and stronger economic accountability, warning that public trust in governance depends on transparency and responsible leadership.

Akinlade made the call on Monday during a press conference to herald the 3rd Session of the 12th Synod of the diocese, scheduled for April 25 and 26 at the Cathedral Church of St Philip, Ayetoro, in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Speaking on Nigeria’s electoral process, the cleric expressed cautious optimism over recent reforms, including the amendment of the Electoral Act and the appointment of a new chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

He said the developments present an opportunity to rebuild confidence in elections, noting that voter apathy in previous polls was largely driven by distrust in the system.

“We hope that these changes will birth more credible elections,” he said, adding that the success of future polls would depend on the neutrality and efficiency of electoral authorities.

The bishop stressed that accountability must not be selective, insisting that individuals found culpable of wrongdoing should face justice regardless of political affiliation.

On the economy, Akinlade said, while there were signs of gradual recovery, many Nigerians had yet to feel the impact.

He cited a 4.07 per cent growth in Gross Domestic Product in the fourth quarter of 2025, but noted that it was insufficient to significantly reduce poverty.

He explained that financial sector reforms had helped stabilise the exchange rate but had also contributed to rising costs of goods and services, particularly imported items, thereby sustaining inflationary pressures.

Akinlade acknowledged government efforts to ease economic hardship, including salary adjustments for public workers and the reintroduction of gratuity payments for retirees.

However, he said unemployment and the high cost of living remained major concerns.

He added that rising petrol prices, currently ranging between N1,250 and N1,400 per litre, had worsened transportation costs and, in turn, food prices.

The cleric also raised concerns over transparency in the oil sector, particularly ongoing investigations into the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited over alleged financial discrepancies.

He urged the government to ensure that revenue from crude oil is properly managed and invested in infrastructure, social services and economic opportunities.

Akinlade identified agriculture and solid minerals as key sectors capable of driving sustainable growth if effectively harnessed.

He urged leaders at all levels to prioritise citizens’ welfare, noting that credible elections and prudent economic management are essential to building a stable and prosperous nation.
