2027: Olawepo-Hashim Urges Tinubu, INEC to Shift Party Primaries to September

A former presidential candidate and energy entrepreneur, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has called on President Bola Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to shift the timetable for political party primaries to September, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.

In an open letter to the President, Olawepo-Hashim cautioned that the current push for early primaries could undermine internal party democracy and weaken the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

He argued that adhering to the legal timeline would allow for a more transparent and inclusive process.

Citing Section 29(1) of the amended Electoral Act, he noted that political parties have until mid-September to conduct their primaries. According to him, using this full window would promote fairness and ensure broader participation among party members.

“The current timetable limits the ability of political parties to organise credible primaries. There is a need to allow sufficient time, as provided by law, for inclusive and participatory processes,” he stated.

Olawepo-Hashim warned that compressing the primary election schedule could trigger internal disputes, sideline aspirants, and erode public confidence in the electoral system. He added that such outcomes could ultimately weaken the democratic process.

He also raised concerns about the broader implications for Nigeria’s democracy, cautioning against any moves that could lead to a non-competitive political environment. According to him, this would pose risks to the country’s democratic stability.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic history, he emphasized that the nation’s progress was achieved through sacrifices made during the struggle against military rule, stressing the importance of preserving political pluralism.

The letter further urged President Tinubu to champion reforms aimed at strengthening electoral credibility. These include reviewing contentious aspects of the Electoral Act and ensuring a level playing field for all political actors.

Olawepo-Hashim also called on the President to advise the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, to step aside to allow for the formation of a more broadly trusted electoral commission ahead of the polls.

He stressed that rebuilding trust in electoral institutions is essential for peaceful and credible elections, noting that confidence in the system remains a cornerstone of democratic governance.

According to him, giving political parties adequate time to conduct primaries would reduce tensions, strengthen internal democracy, and improve the quality of candidates emerging for public office.

He concluded that aligning the primary timetable with the Electoral Act would demonstrate respect for due process and help prevent avoidable political disputes ahead of the 2027 elections.

Olawepo-Hashim expressed optimism that the President would consider these recommendations in the interest of national stability and cohesion, adding that a transparent and inclusive primary process is vital for credible elections and the continued consolidation of democracy in Nigeria.
