2027: Governor Lawal emerges APC consensus candidate for Zamfara governorship election

Governor Dauda Lawal was affirmed as the consensus All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate for Zamfara state for the 2027 general election.

The affirmation was done yesterday by the APC members in Madawaki ward in Gusau Local Government area of Zamfara state.

Party members and supporters gathered across various wards in the state, where they unanimously endorsed Lawal as the party’s flag bearer for the forthcoming governorship election.

The affirmation was witnessed by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and that of the APC from the party’s National Headquarters. The INEC and APC representatives commended the electorates for peaceful conduct of the process.

On his part, Governor Lawal thanked the people for believing in him and assured them of more dividend of democracy.

The governor pledged to sustain and expand developmental projects aimed at improving the living conditions of the people of Zamfara State.

On May 11, 2026, the APC National Headquarters had cleared Governor Lawal for re-election in the 2027 governorship poll in Zamfara State.

The governor was cleared by the ruling party’s screening committee, headed by the National Chairman of the party, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, in Abuja.

On 5 May 2026, a delegation led by the Zamfara State SSG, Abubakar Nakwada, returned Governor Lawal’s completed Expression of Interest and Nomination Form to the APC screening committee in Abuja.

On April 25, 2026, Governor Lawal was endorsed as the sole candidate for the governorship slot by APC stakeholders in Zamfara State.

The stakeholders also endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 elections.

The endorsement was announced at a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.

The meeting brought together party leaders from across the state, including four former governors: Ahmed Yarima, Mahmuda Shinkafi, Abdulaziz Yari and Bello Mohammed Matawalle.

Also at the meeting were elected officials, elders and representatives of youth and women’s groups from across the state.

Hajj 2026: Zamfara completes airlift of pilgrims from Gusau Airport to Saudi Arabia

Zamfara State government yesterday concluded the first phase of 2026 Hajj operation by airlifting the final contingent of its pilgrims to Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

The final batch of pilgrims departed the Gusau International Airport aboard Max Air at exactly 10:44 a.m. Nigerian time.

A statement by the Zamfara State Hajj Commission signed by its spokesperson Abubakar Aliyu said 490 intending pilgrims, comprising 306 male and 184 female pilgrims, were airlifted yesterday.

The Max Air aircraft with registration number NGL3035 aircraft arrived from Kano at exactly 9:08 a.m. before boarding and airlift operations commenced.

The flight conveyed intending pilgrims from Gusau Local Government Area, alongside other officials.

The Executive Chairman of the Hajj Commission, Musa Mallaha, was also among those airlifted. Prior to departure, he received the delegation of Governor Dauda Lawal, and his wife, Hajiya Huriyya Dauda Lawal, who delivered a farewell message to the intending pilgrims.

The pilgrims were invited on Tuesday, May 19, 2026 for screening and the issuance of their Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) of 500 US dollars each.

Before their departure, Governor Lawal addressed the intending pilgrims and prayed for their safe journey, successful Hajj exercise, and safe return to their families.

He also thanked Almighty Allah (SWT) for granting success in transforming Gusau International Airport into what it is today.

Earlier, the Managing Director of Gusau International Airport, Comrade Kabiru Yahaya, commended Governor Lawal and Mr Mallaha, for the successful operations.

He also accompanied the pilgrims at the airport following arrangements made with Max Air officials for the operation of the morning flight schedule.

Among the prominent personalities on the flight were His Royal Highness, Sarkin Katsinan Gusau, Alhaji Abdulkadir Gusau; the Managing Director of Media Corporation, Alhaji Bello Dakin Gari; as well as several Local Government officials and other dignitaries.

Medical outreach: Zamfara gov’t treats 6,842 patients

The Zamfara State Government treated 6,842 surgical and medical cases through its comprehensive, free, modified medical outreach program.

The free medical treatment program began in August 2023 and was provided at Yariman Bakura Special Hospital, General Hospital Gusau, Eye Centre Gusau, and Farida Hospital.

A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, revealed that phases 015, 016, and 017 of the Modified Medical Outreach were held from Friday, 1st to Sunday, May 17, 2026.

The statement added that the program provided medical services for cataract surgeries, groin swellings such as hernias and hydroceles, repairs of vesicovaginal fistulas, and health education.

The statement read in parts: “The Zamfara State Government’s Special Modified Medical Outreach is part of Governor Dauda Lawal’s resolve to address identified serious medical cases to enhance the health and well-being of the people of Zamfara.

“The modified outreach offers free medical treatment for people suffering from common surgical conditions such as cataracts, hernias, hydroceles, and vesicovaginal fistula repairs.

“Besides medical assistance, the program educates citizens about the importance of maintaining good health and wellness. This initiative is a positive step towards improving the community’s overall health and well-being.”

The Modified Medical Outreach has treated surgical and medical cases through tele-screening, providing specialist care to patients in rural and semi-urban areas across 14 local government areas in the State.

“The 17 phases conducted so far encompass 5,282 surgical cases and 1,200 medical cases, covering Seropositive Cases, Groin Swellings & Lumps/Special, Cataract Extraction, VVF Special/UV prolapse, and other Special and General Surgeries.

“The state government will continue to provide such medical assistance in identified special cases for the benefit of the vulnerable people of the state.”

Zamfara to showcase Rescue Mission projects at third anniversary

Governor Dauda Lawal would showcase his landmark achievements at the third anniversary of his Rescue Mission administration scheduled next month.

The governor had set up a 10-man committee that will oversee activities commemorating the Rescue Administration’s achievements over the last three years, the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, said.

He said the committee is tasked with planning and coordinating events that will showcase the administration’s progress and identify projects that will be commissioned during the celebration.

Governor Lawal assumed office on May 29, 2023, as the 5th civilian Governor of Zamfara State.

Over the past three years, the governor has advanced reforms and delivered many impactful projects across the 14 local government areas, in line with six-point rescue agenda of his administration.

The committee will therefore work to document these milestones, amplify the administration’s vision, and articulate its policy direction as it enters the next phase of governance.

The committee is chaired by Mouktar Mohammed Lugga (Chief of Staff), with Lawal Barau Bungudu (Commissioner Works and Infrastructure), Engr. Ahmad Garban Yandi (Local Government & Chieftaincy Affairs), Nasiru Ibrahim Zurmi (Commissioner of Housing and Urban Dev’t) as members.

Other members are Bello Auta (Commissioner of Finance), Mahmud Muhammad Abdullahi (Commissioner, Information and Culture), Arc. Ibrahim Agigi (Special Adviser, Infrastructure & Urban Renewal), Ibrahim Modibbo (Special Adviser, Special Duties), Engr. Kabiru Abba (Director, Project Monitoring Office), and Dr Abubakar Mohammed (Permanent Secretary, Cabinet Affairs) as Secretary of the committee.

Three Zamfara serving senators get return tickets

The All Progressives Congress (APC) by had declared Senators Abdulaziz Yari, Ikra Bilbis, and Sahabi Ya’u as winners of the senatorial primary elections in Zamfara.

Senators Yari, Bilbis, and Ya’u currently represent Zamfara West, Central, and North senatorial districts in the 10th Senate.

Chairman of the Senatorial Primary Election Committee, Prof. Ishaq Bala, announced the results after the trio polled the highest votes in their respective zones.

Bala said Zamfara Central recorded 136,419 votes cast, where Bilbis emerged winner with 127,686 votes, defeating Lubna Muhammad, who scored 140 votes, and Aliyu Akilu-Muhammad, who got 8,593 votes.

In Zamfara West, 125,311 votes were cast, and Sen. Yari won with 125,235 votes, while his opponent, Nasiru Zarumi, polled 76 votes.

For Zamfara North, the election held on May 19, saw Sen. Ya’u won with 65,642 votes across the local government areas, defeating Hannafi Musa-Moriki, Sani Abdullahi-Shinkafi, and Tijjani Yahaya, who recorded significantly lower votes.

Bala said the primaries were conducted transparently and peacefully, with no reports of violence or major disputes.

“We have successfully concluded the exercise. There was no violence or misunderstanding among contestants,” he said.

He urged any aggrieved aspirant to submit complaints to the party’s appeal committee, which would sit on May 28, at the same venue in Gusau.

Bala commended party members, stakeholders, and the media for their support, and lauded the Zamfara government for providing a peaceful environment for the exercise.

He reaffirmed APC’s commitment to due process and internal democracy as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
