Tinubu calls for creation of regional force within West Africa

President Bola Tinubu has urged the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, to collaborate in establishing and maintaining a regional standby force to bolster security and foster economic progress within the region.

Mr Tinubu made the call while speaking at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government in Abuja, Nigeria.

The Nigerian President, whose tenure was renewed for a second term as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, highlighted the expediency of a standby force in the face of growing security threats.

He said: “The regional action plan against terrorism has enhanced cooperation on training, intelligence sharing, and humanitarian interventions.

“In addition to this, the Ministers of Finance and Defence met recently in Abuja to raise funds for activating the ECOWAS Standby Force.”
