In a somber statement released today by Mr. Tom Garba, publisher of Tgnews, the Nigerian legal community and the nation at large mourn the loss of Professor Kharisu Sufiyan Chukkol, a towering figure in criminal law scholarship, who passed away at the age of 82.
Born into a family of distinction, Professor Chukkol’s influence extended beyond academia
The revered legal icon’s death, attributed to a protracted illness, was confirmed by a family source, leaving behind a legacy that will echo through generations.
Professor Chukkol was a luminary in Nigeria’s legal landscape, a scholar whose intellect and dedication earned him widespread admiration.
His groundbreaking work, Law of Crimes in Nigeria, remains a cornerstone of legal education and practice, revered as the definitive authority on Nigerian criminal law and the administration of justice. For decades, his contributions shaped the minds of jurists, lawyers, and students, cementing his status as a national treasure.
We have lost a giant
Born into a family of distinction, Professor Chukkol’s influence extended beyond academia. He leaves behind his wife, seven children, and numerous grandchildren, including his son Abdulkareem Chukkol, a former head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
He was also an elder brother to Professor Liman Tukur, the former Secretary to the Government of Adamawa State and immediate past Vice Chancellor of Modibbo Adama University, Yola, as well as Hassan Tukur, who served as Principal Personal Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The Chukkol family’s legacy of service to Nigeria is a testament to the professor’s enduring impact.
The news of his passing has cast a pall over the legal fraternity and beyond. “We have lost a giant,” Mr. Tom Garba wrote in his statement.
“Professor Chukkol’s life was a beacon of justice, a relentless pursuit of excellence in law, and a gift to our nation’s legal system. His absence will be deeply felt.”
The late professor’s funeral prayer is scheduled to take place at the Abuja Central Mosque following Zuhr prayer, where mourners will gather to bid farewell to a man whose life was dedicated to upholding the principles of justice. He will be laid to rest, but his contributions will endure, etched into the fabric of Nigeria’s legal history.
As the nation grieves, Professor Kharisu Sufiyan Chukkol will be remembered not only for his intellectual prowess but for his unwavering commitment to advancing the rule of law—a legacy that will continue to inspire long after his departure.
