Son of Late Emir Ado Bayero Implicated in N70 Million Land Fraud Scandal as Police Arrest Alleged Frontman in Kano

A shocking land fraud case has rocked Kano’s traditional and business circles, with Bello Ado Bayero, the District Head of Tarauni and son of the late revered Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, accused of orchestrating a sophisticated syndicate that allegedly defrauded a local businessman of N70 million.

Police investigators from Zone 1 Headquarters in Kano have arrested Yahaya Mohammed Uba, described by sources as the frontman in the alleged scam. Authorities traced N60 million of the swindled funds to Bello Ado Bayero’s bank account, sparking intense scrutiny over the high-profile traditional ruler’s possible involvement.

According to details emerging from an ongoing police probe, the victim, Kano businessman Alhaji Bashir Mohammed, was lured into purchasing a plot of land in Darmanawa, under Tarauni Local Government Area.

On February 5, 2026, Yahaya Mohammed Uba allegedly provided his GTBank account details via WhatsApp, posing as the legitimate owner of the property. The agreed purchase price was N70 million.

The following day, February 6, the businessman transferred the full amount from his wife’s account to Yahaya’s. Yahaya reportedly acknowledged receipt and arranged a document-signing meeting for February 7.

In a stunning turn, Yahaya allegedly retracted his ownership claim, stating that the land actually belonged to District Head Bello Ado Bayero. When challenged, he purportedly explained that traditional rulers frequently use proxies to mask their involvement in such deals.

Police investigations further uncovered that the documents handed over were forged. Compounding the fraud, the disputed land is currently embroiled in litigation at the Federal High Court before Justice Hafsatu, involving parties Shuaibu Salisu and Mahmoud Muhammed.

Alhaji Bashir Mohammed reportedly confronted Bello Ado Bayero directly to demand a refund of his N70 million, but the district head allegedly employed evasion tactics and refused to repay the sum. Frustrated, the businessman filed a petition with the Zone 1 Police Headquarters, triggering Yahaya Mohammed Uba’s arrest.

DSP Hassan Abdullahi, spokesperson for Zone One Police Headquarters in Kano, confirmed the detention and emphasized that the investigation remains active.

“We have a suspect in custody. Investigation is ongoing, and we are expanding the scope of the inquiry to identify and apprehend other individuals connected to the alleged syndicate,” Abdullahi stated.

He added that detectives are meticulously tracking financial trails and scrutinizing documents, with assurances of further updates as more suspects are pursued.

The alleged syndicate reportedly includes Bello Ado Bayero, Yahaya Mohammed Uba, Salisu Shuaibu, and an unnamed staff member from the Kano State Land Registry.

As of now, police have not publicly disclosed whether Bello Ado Bayero has been formally invited for questioning or if additional arrests are imminent.

The scandal has ignited widespread outrage in Kano, with calls mounting for a thorough, transparent probe into what many describe as land racketeering shielded by royal influence.

The case highlights persistent concerns over fraudulent land transactions in the region, where forged titles and proxy dealings continue to victimize unsuspecting investors.
