Re-strategise to attain SDGs before 2030 amid global conflicts — GASDI DG

Amid the Iran/Israel, Ukraine/Russia, and other global conflicts, stakeholders have raised the need to re-strategise on how Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) can be attained before the 2030 deadline.

Stakeholders, including the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Clement Adebooye, Director of Global Affairs and Sustainable Development Institute (GASDI), Prof. John Agbonifo, and foreign scholars, lamented that ongoing conflicts may impede the success of SDGs by 2030.

At the annual international sustainable development dialogue, Agbonifo said SDGs were designed to address issues under stable conditions, but wars and conflicts mean that we live in an unstable time. So the strategy marked out to address issues under stable times is less likely to work under unstable times, which is the reason why we have this programme.

He added: “There is a need for us to revisit the SGDs, especially against the contemporary context, and to see what can be done to be able to achieve those goals by negotiating the conditions and terms.

“Nobody foresaw that we would be embroiled in a kind of contention and crisis that the world is currently facing ten years ago. we need to be creative and imaginative through this crisis to attain the SDG goals.”
