Ahead of the exit of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration on Monday, May 29, the government has blamed migration from rural to urban areas for insecurity and economic woes facing Nigeria.
Clem Agba, the Minister of State Finance, Budget and National Planning, disclosed this on Thursday during an end-of-tenure conference in Abuja.
According to him, youths migrating from rural to urban areas contribute to the increasing rate of slums in cities, resulting in insecurity and other economic challenges.
He noted that the government’s effort, which targeted integrated rural development as contained in the National Development Plan 2021-2025, has been impactful in reducing urban-related challenges.
“The issues around integrated rural development as entrenched in the National Development Plan 2021-2025 for me is vital and is one program I think that the incoming government should also pay some particular attention to.
“This is because if we can resolve the issues around integrated rural development, we will be solving a lot of the urban-related problems”, he stated.
