LASU centre holds maiden orientation

The Lagos State University Centre for Peace and Security Studies held its maiden orientation programme for postgraduate students on Saturday.

The event was held at the Aderemi Makanjuola Lecture Theatre, Ojo.

The Director of the centre, Prof Adewunmi Falode, said the centre not focus on theories of solving conflicts alone, but also engaged in practical solutions.

He said, “Welcome, students, and rest assured that you’re in safe hands at LASU. We will equip you all with the best knowledge.”

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the university, Prof Oseni Afisi, who represented the Vice Chancellor, Ibiyemi Bello, noted that the students were fortunate to have experts as their instructors.

He said, “There’ll be a combination of qualified teachers who will bring out the best in you. As students, ensure you’re available for classes and do the right thing.

“The management of the institution will provide you with everything you need to progress in this field. I congratulate you all. By the time you graduate, we will be proud to say we’ve produced the best of brains.”

Similarly, the Deputy Registrar and Special Adviser to the VC, Dr Lateef Salami, stated that the orientation programme was to familiarise the students with the institution.

Salami said, “You must be careful on campus. As students of the institution, you must abstain from criminal activities such as examination malpractice, sexual abuse, extortion, and others. Additionally, you must all familiarise yourselves with the school security unit in case you face any threats.”

Also speaking, a representative of the university’s librarian, Dr Ogungbeni John, said the library was a centre for information resources. He said, “As postgraduate students, you can’t do without a library. We have a library in the Faculty of Arts, and we also have a main library. The university has the biggest library in West Africa, and it will be opened in a few months.”

The Dean of Postgraduate Studies, Prof Ibrahim Olateju, encouraged the students, stating that if they focused on their studies, they would graduate on time.

Also, a representative of the school’s Director of Information and Communication Technology, Riliwan Mustapha, pledged to support the students.

He said, “LASU is a hub of ICT. Everything is online, as we don’t have a direct interface with the students. Any issue can be resolved online without you having to stress yourself.”
