Lagos State govt arrests statewide crackdown

The Lagos State Government on Monday, June 3, 2026, arrested 144 beggars as part of an intensified enforcement operation against street begging and environmental infractions.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed the figure via his verified X account.

According to Wahab, the arrests were carried out across multiple locations in the state, including Agege, Oshodi, and CMS (Lagos Island).

He noted that enforcement operations are still ongoing in other areas such as Admiralty Way in Lekki and Addo Road in Ajah.

In an earlier operation on the same day, officials arrested 22 beggars in Agege and Oshodi, comprising adults and a few teenagers.

A separate operation at CMS resulted in the arrest of 14 adults and 9 children.

“Earlier today, in a separate enforcement operation, our team apprehended 22 beggars at Oshodi and Agege, comprising adults and a few teenagers.

Additionally, 14 adults and 9 children were apprehended at CMS,” Wahab wrote.

“Clearance operations are also ongoing at Admiralty Way, Lekki, and Addo Road in Ajah. A total of 144 beggars across Lagos State had been arrested as of 1400hrs today.”

The latest crackdown reflects the state government’s continued efforts to rid the streets of begging and other environmental violations.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
