Kogi Assembly Seats: Okai Disputes Four-Seat Limit Per Federal Constituency

Political activist, Usman Okai Austin, has rejected claims that a federal constituency cannot have more than four seats in a state assembly.

In a statement posted on his Facebook page on Tuesday, Okai called on the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kogi State to apply the law correctly in matters of constituency delineation.

He said the issues under discussion relate to the allocation of state assembly seats in parts of the state.

“They’re trying to shortchange us again,” he said.

Okai argued that population size and land mass should be considered in determining representation.

He also said there are federal constituencies in other states with more than four state assembly seats, citing Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, Oyo and Anambra states.

According to him, Kogi State, which has nine federal constituencies, should have at least 27 state assembly seats.

He called on INEC in the state to ensure fairness in any decisions on constituency delineation.
