In a swift breakthrough following one of the most shocking family massacres in recent memory, the Kano State Police Command has arrested three principal suspects believed to be behind the brutal killing of a housewife, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

The arrests, announced in an official press release on Sunday, came after an intensive intelligence-led sting operation conducted between 10:00 p.m. on January 17 and 4:00 a.m. on January 18, under the direct supervision of Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD. The operation was prompted by directives from Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
The suspects are: Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters, Kano – identified as the leader of the syndicate and a nephew (younger brother in some reports) of the deceased housewife; Isyaku Yakubu, aka “Chebe,” 40, of Sagagi Quarters, Kano; Yakubu Abdulaziz, aka “Wawo,” 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters, Kano.

During interrogation, Umar Auwalu reportedly confessed to orchestrating the gruesome attack and admitted that the group had carried out multiple violent crimes in recent months. Police linked them to the earlier murder and burning of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano, with one report noting familial ties in that incident as well.
The Dorayi Chiranchi attack, which left the community in mourning, involved armed intruders who broke into the home, used sharp weapons and blunt objects to kill the victims, and reportedly disposed of some bodies in a well within the compound. The deceased included Fatima Abubakar (35) and her children, one of whom was a 17-year-old Hafiza (a young woman who had memorized the Qur’an).
Items recovered from the suspects include four blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the deceased, a cutlass, a club (gora), an undisclosed sum of money robbed from the scene, and other dangerous weapons. Investigations remain ongoing to determine the full motive and any additional accomplices.
The Kano State Police Command, through Public Relations Officer CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, commended the officers involved and thanked members of the public for their support, prayers, and cooperation. The command reiterated its unwavering commitment to bringing all perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety of residents.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for heightened security measures in Kano metropolis. Governor Abba Yusuf had earlier condemned the killings as “barbaric and unacceptable,” ordering an immediate manhunt.
As the suspects face further questioning and potential arraignment, the rapid police response has offered a measure of relief to a grieving community still reeling from the scale of the violence. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant while assuring continued efforts to dismantle criminal syndicates operating in the area.
